Artist research

I have researched several different artists and found out what they might use to create there images and explained my own views on what I think the artist is trying to communicate through there work. Also I have explained what I like about the work produced by the artists I have chosen to look at.

The Starn Twins

The first artist I looked at was Doug and Mike Starn, better know as The Starn Twins, who were born in 1961 in New Jersey. The reason I chose to look at The Starn Twins was because I like how they project there images onto photographic paper onto the wall and then individually hand process the images. Once the images are done they put the image back together in all the separate squares they had first projected the image onto. I also like how they aren't careful with there images, as they scratch into there images and apply dirt and bleach.

Corrine Day

I also looked at Corrine Day who was born in Ickenham in Greater London in 1962. While in Tokyo in 1985 she met Mark Szaszy who had a keen interest in photography, and taught Corrine Day how to use a camera. She then met Phil Bicker in 1989 who introduced her to other stylists, with whom she created some of her images with. Corrine Day was mostly known as a fashion photographer. I chose to look at Corrine Days work because I like the was she sets out her images as I personally think it looks like its showing the movement of the model. Also I like how it shows the many different angles of a person.

Ansel Adams

Ansal Adams was born in San Francisco, California in 1902. He was an American photographer and environmentalist and mostly took images in black and white of Yosemite National Park and the American West. Producing his first photograph in 1921. To ensure sharpness in his images Adams uses large-format cameras because of the high resolution. I like Ansel Adams photographs because I like how he uses black and white also by using black and white I like the shadows it casts in the landscape. I think that Ansel Adams is trying to communicate the beauty of landscapes also the size and scale of the environment.

Don McCullin

Don McCullin was born in Finsbury Park, London in 1935 and is a photojournalist, focusing mostly on war photography. He once said "Photography for me is not looking, its feeling. If you cant feel what you're looking at then you're never going to get others to feel anything when they look at your pictures." When I read this quote I found this extremely inspirational. I like the images that Don McCullen takes because I like how they make you feel extremely strong emotions. I think that McCullen is trying to portray strong emotions though his world poverty and war images.

Mari Mahr

Mari Mahr was born in 1941 in Santiago de Chile. Her first exhibition was in London at the photographers Gallery. She uses layers to create her images, she does this by taking one image that would become the backdrop, she then layers objects over the top of her first image and takes another picture of the two layes wwhich then becomes her final image. I like the images by Mahr because I like how the proportions aren't right. Also I like the process in which she made the images. I personally think that Mahr tries to communicate story's or her own events in life through her images.

Hiroshi Sugimoto

Hiroshi Sugimoto was born in 1948 in Tokyo, Japan. He focuses his work on the transience of life and the conflict between life and death. "Time Exposed" is an expression of how he has spoken about his work. He uses large format cameras and an extremely long exposure time to create his images. I like how Sugimoto uses long exposure to create his images. I think that Sugimoto is trying to express the presence, absence and stillness of something in his images.

Eadweard Muybridge

Eadweard Muybridge was born in Kingston upon Thames in 1830. His early work was in motion-picture projection and he then moved on to study motion through photography. He was also the first person to discover that when a horse runs at some point in its movement all four legs are off the ground at the same time in one movement. I like Muybridge's images because I like how he records movement through photography using mostly animals such as horses, birds or cats. He also uses people walking or dancing to see there movements.

Kerrang

We set up our own studio to take our own images to use on the front of the rock magazine Kerrang. By using the camera and by moving the lights to create different lighting effects we were able to create some good effective images to use as a front cover.

This was one of the resources we were given so that we knew what each different lighting made our images say. Also it helped us decide where we should have out lights so we got the most effective image.

In this image we had the lighting from the sides. We also used props to make the pictures look more realistic for the front of a music magazine.  I like this image because I like the effect the lighting has on the models.

I also like this image because again I like the lighting because I like the shadows it has created on the faces of the models. I was able to create this lighting by just having the light on the right hand side of the photographer.

After creating the images and experimenting with different lighting effects we were given a template for a Kerrang magazine and then had to edit our images by rotating them to create different front page images.

I like how each one of the Kerrang covers have turned out however if I was to re-do the images I would have moved the lights for the top two images so that they weren't as dark, unlike the bottom two which I really light the lighting.

Image Manipulation

Over the last two days I have learnt a number of new skills that has helped me develop my own existing skills and some new skills I have learnt throughout different processes of work.

Firstly to create my images that I was later going to edit into album covers, we were separated into groups and were able to work together as a team to create our images to edit. I captured images of moving light by adjusting my cameras shutter speed and changing it to stay open for 20 seconds, this made it able to capture the light movement effectively. To create the different colours of light I used different coloured plastics such as blue, red, green, orange and pink to cover normal torches that we would make movements with to create the coloured patterns.

To create this image my group and I decided between us who would be the model, who would control the overhead lights and camera and who would be in control of the torches. Once we had decided that we decided how the model would pose. We then chose what colours we would use for the image and what movement we would make around the model. For the image on the left we decided to use pink and green and chose to use circles as our movements to show the models silhouette.

On this image we used the same process as the image above but decided to change how the model was stood and we decided to change the oculars we used. Also we changed the movement of light around the model, this time we decided to move it as one straight line around the edge of the body, with green zigzags across the back.

After creating the images in the dark room we downloaded them onto our macs and edited them on photoshop using effects such as, liner burn, vivid light, pin light, luminosity, multiply, invert and by changing the levels on my images.

This was the first image I edited on photoshop and I am pleased with the final outcome. At first I wasn't happy with how it looked because I had only changed the image to luminosity but hadn't changed the levels, so the background looked grainy and grey but by changing the levels I was able to change my image so the background was all black. I like this effect because the models silhouette stands out against the background.

This is my favourite image because I like the different colours that can be seen throughout the letter. For this image I incorporated an image from earlier work I have created, the image used in this was from the alphabet made from objects found outside. When making this image I had some issues with being able to see the text over two layer of images, I then found out that to be able to see the text over two layers of images, I had to move the text icon over the top of layer 1 and layer 2 on the right hand bottom corner of photoshop so that my text was the top layer of the album cover.

This was the last edit I created using photoshop. In this image we derided to use two models with one person conducting the movement of the torches. Again I have used images from the alphabet work I had created previously. In this image I like the effect the light has given the silhouettes, also by using the letter V over the top by changing it into greyscale then by using the levels to increase the black in the image. Once i had dragged the V over the top of my background image i then used screen in the layers pallet to get rid of any black in the image.

shade and form

In shade and form I have focused on looking at the depth of field, which is how sharp or soft an image shows the object. By having the correct amount of time and light being balanced then you can create a good image.

This image is one of my favourites because I like the colours. Also I like how the camera has focused onto the padlock and blurred the background behind it making the padlock stand out.

When taking this picture I kept in mind perspective. I think that this image is effective because I like how the wall fades into the distance.

This was one of the first images I took when out, I don't think that its a very good image however I like how bright the colours are that are in this image.

I really how I have taken this image, this is because I like how I was able to focus on the bolt lock through the ivy.

Also in this image I like how the shades change on the different sides of the concrete block. However I don't like how the image focusees on the bottom of the block. If I was to retake this image I would make my camera focus on the point on the block.

I like the shapes in this image however I don't think this picture is as interesting as the other photos I have taken.

I like how the colours in this image are so vibrant. By using macro I was able to focus on the berries really well.
